Workout Wednesday - Metabolism!

Happy 4th of July!

I hope everyone has a safe and fun Independence Day!  What are you doing for the Day?  Getting any activity in?  Swimming, hiking, biking?  Taking advantage of some extra time?  What are you eating?  Do you have wonderful traditional foods you have on the 4th?  I would love to know about your celebrations, share in the comments section!  I am planning to swim (if it doesn't rain!), and grill!  Fireworks from the roof, the rumor is you can see EIGHT different shows from my place, how exciting!  For workout wednesday, I wanted to share a little about metabolism, which you can now use the day to boost :)  Have a great day!!

Charge your Metabolism

I think we all wish we had a faster metabolism.  After all, a faster metabolism means you get to eat more and still lose weight or maintain!  Many things can slow down your metabolism, some we have control over (going to long without eating, not eating enough, lack of physical activity), some we don't (aging, gender).  Good news is, there are ways to charge that metabolism back up, and that's important!

One easy way, is to get up and get moving!  Sitting too much, at work, in the car, in front of the tv, slows your metabolism.  This is true even if you are getting your workout in.  One easy way to fix this is to stretch, walk and fidget through out the day.

Scientists call this NEAT, or non exercise activity thermogenesis, and it can boost your burn and help you drop weight.  This was shown in a study by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.  They had lean volunteers who were fed extra calories, those who paced frequently or fidgeted maintained their weight, while those people who did nothing additional all day, gained weight.

If you take advantage of every opportunity to walk a little more (park further away), take the stairs, and other small things, it can add up and make a big difference in your metabolism.  Try pacing while you are on the phone, either at home or in the office, taking the stairs, stretching during your favorite show, and anything else you can do during the day to move more!

How do you move more during the day?  Share in the comments below!
